The OP is using Open Office. It's great, but it's not always successful in rendering older office docs. And clients hate getting stuff that in't 100% Office latest version *** or whatever,
That's the only downside of Open Office.

A former boss used to moan and moan at me because i used Open Office and the formatting didn't quite work on his MS Office...so I'd remind him that it's a work laptop (i.e. his) so if he wants me to use MS Office, then he should provide it and I'll happily use it, then he'd go strangely quiet... until the next time the formatting wasn't quite right when he'd have his moan, i'd suggest he provide and he goes quiet, until the next time... I never did get MS office put on that laptop.

The opposite, I ended up being one of the few persons with MS because I needed to create and amend certain documents and the formatting was going wrong. It was the fact that I had to log onto my boss's account to use Word that eventually meant I was authorised to have it when most of the rest of the office were on Open Office.
What's the cheapest (legal) way of getting it? I reformatted a laptop and don't have the key of the old version that was on there. Some of the formatting of my boy's homework hasn't translated to Open Office recently and so I'm looking at whether I can load Office without spending too much.
Go to FileHippo site and try Kingsoft's WPS Office, freeware and formats those bits of MS Office that OpenOffice doesn't quite get right.

Also has PDF functionality inbuilt.

I can't fault it yet on Mobile or Desktop

Yeh we've just given our students 365 which allows them to download office for free.

We have an agreement with Microsoft which costs us around £6000 per year but includes all desktop OS's server OS's, SQL, SCCM, Office and much more

Same software for a company would cost 10x more

In between here and there
I like MS Office, always have done I thought the 365 was quite reasonable value for 5 installs. I think it is £60 a year

Sorry I was talking to the guy who paid for Microsoft works.

Here is an idea buy a cheap copy of office 2003 off ebay or see if anyone has on laying around then install the office compatability update OR see if you can find a copy of office 2010 Home & Student second hand as the cd version is for 3 computers.

The educational versions of Office should be available if your child has an ac.uk email address, and as others have said may even be free depending on what their institution has signed up to.

The ac.uk email address isn't used much in schools. It is worth contacting the school to see what sort of licensing arrangement has been made with Microsoft. You might not get the answer that you want depending on who you speak to. Don't assume that the ICT department will know or that the person who answers the phone will know what you are talking about. The unlikeliest of people can be in charge of licensing ranging from, Bursers, site managers, facilities managers, consortium co-ordinators, managed provision companies - I've had to deal with the all in the past and most of them have been clueless.

I did much the same, except that I got 2007, as an upgrade version, then an old copy of Works (99p) which validated the upgrade. Can't remember what I paid altogether, but it was something like £35 all told as best I can remember.

Yes, you're right about ac.uk, I was thinking of 16+ colleges. It's definitely worth contacting the school as you say.

Agree... depending who your employer is they may have a deal with Microsoft, mine does one where we can get the full MS Office package for about £9, if you want the physical CD/DVD then it's about £20 I recall.
That's how I got my copy.

If I remember rightly you send them an email, if it's accepted you are sent a link to buy a downloadable copy.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but have you tried Microsofts Onedrive? The online part has a built in office for free, it doesnt contain all the features but you shouldn't have formatting issues.
