hi there can anybody tell which cassette i need i ride a 16 speed barracuda 12x23 39x53 which i've been told is to advanced for me i'am fairly new to road cycling and struggling on the hills and would like to change the cassette to a 13x28 or something near to that . i would like to know cassette to install on my bike without to many alterations it's a shimano cassette

Hi - the very basic guide is that the existing set up should work on anything 29 and under.

That number (in case you are wondering) is the sum of the difference in front rings ( 14) and the cassette (11) as regards your current set up.

So if you substitute a say 13-28 the new total would be 29 which should be ok.

If your going to change from a standard double to a compact I wouldn't change the cassette til you've tried it, the compact would make a difference to your hill climbing making it easier than your current setup.

To go compact you are looking at a different front chainset, chainrings and cranks.

As it's 8 speed I'd get a 13 x 28 cassette - you'll get some bigger gear drops at the bottom end (i.e. the bigger sprockets) but that might not matter to you. It's the cheapest option.

Unless you are gear ratio obsessed (I'll excuse myself) then go for this as the cheapest way to get an easier climb.

I've got to do something similar, but I've got a shoulder injury, so looking to go compact, but with a 10/11 speed gears - I currently run 8 speed with 53/39 and 13-24 - never needed the 24 before the injury, but finding getting out of the saddle more and more painful.

Go with a cassette change, and a new chain, and see how you go.
