Sure that you want to buy a bike online? Be interested in what others here think. For me I'd want the security of having the LBS set the bike up properly & check the fit for me. Also many good LBS offer to check your bike out after a few weeks for problems that can arise when you first start riding it.

As for buying a bike, I would recommended that you find a good LBS (the is a thread recommended them in the Beginner section) and try riding the bike you are looking to buy, it is the only way to find if it is really right for you.

I've got a Sirrus (sports '06) and I find it a great fast bike, I used it for Pedal for Scotland, its been on canal paths and other rough surfaces too, although they wouldn't be my choice surfaces. I still prefer this bike to my others but now my commute is shorter, its been retired to a leisure bike. The globe looks like a good recommendation, my alternative would be a Ridgeback the might be worth considering, Ive got a Velocity for my commute. It has 37c tires, I think I'll put something narrower on when they eventually 4,300 miles there still going strong but its only a year and a half old.

I can confirm that HLaB on a Sirrus was fast, thank god he wasn't on the Bianchi... He really proved that you don't need a road bike to go fast...

Im thinking the Mongoose Crossway 450 looks by far the best of the hybrids in the £350-ish price area. - Anyone see any obvious downfalls?

Compared to the Globe Vienna 3, Ridgeback Velocity (link to last years model) and Giant CRS 2.5

It's got front suspension. It's up to you, but do you really want that? It will sap your energy, IME.

TBH, not particularly.

But im struggling to find a hybrid I like with same spec - but without front suspension.

If the Sirrus could take 700x35mm tyres id have it in a minute
