I suspect that to make the automated packing & picking easier Amazon have only a few standard size boxes. Anything up to a certain size is packed in the box you got, then there's a bigger one for the next size up and so on.

A disgraceful London slur against Birmingham from the 1600s and I'm pretty surprised it's suggested as a legitimate current "British colloquial" translation without noting its offensive nature.

It wasn't CRC, or Amazon for that matter. It was a German company called Reichelt Elektronik. And it did come with packaging, consisting of bundled up bits of brown paper. And in case anyone's interested, here's the full set of dimensions:
Battery 85mm x 55mm x 3mm
Battery box 90mm x 75mm x 50mm
Package box 300mm x 240mm x 105mm
Why they couldn't have just popped it in a jiffy, I don't know. It's not like batteries are delicate.
