It wasn't CRC, or Amazon for that matter. It was a German company called Reichelt Elektronik. And it did come with packaging, consisting of bundled up bits of brown paper. And in case anyone's interested, here's the full set of dimensions:

View attachment 434554

Battery 85mm x 55mm x 3mm

Battery box 90mm x 75mm x 50mm

Package box 300mm x 240mm x 105mm

Why they couldn't have just popped it in a jiffy, I don't know. It's not like batteries are delicate.

It's a lithium battery.

Those things can possibly selfimmolate!

Gotta package it properly... best wrap it up in a big bundle of flammable paper...

Do they do free returns? Fill the box with house bricks and send it back.

When i worked in mail order we were careful to mimise shipping costs. It was all about the packaging cost and size/weight. Sometimes bigger but lighter was cheaper because we bought a zillion of those boxes. Sometimes smaller was better because the size qualified at a vastly different shipping cost. When you are sending thousands of items the smallest of costs add up pretty quickly.
There's also the environmental cost of some packaging. At least that all looks recyclable..
