The way I look at it (a beginner myself and definitely no expert)

I too own a Triban. My philosophy is that the bike is labelled as a road bike, therefore, it will only be ridden on the road.
Depends what you class a road, I have been down some roads in my land rovers in the past m.t.b.'s would struggle with, (well maybe not) but you get the idea. They were still classed as roads.

I rode my Defy up the Marriotts way fairly regularly, mostly paved but some is a bit dirt track and it was just fine. I went around the puddles and kept of the grass. Our drive is 1/4 mile of level-ish farm track and I ride the Defy down there too and never had a problem. They are not as fragile as people would have you believe.

As long as you don't take bumpy terrain too fast then the only thing really limiting you is traction. You won't damage anything unless you hit big bumps too fast or take it off some mountain bike drop-offs.

Here's a route I took my road bike on 23mm's up, with no damage at all.
