Hello, a year ago i was sitting in this forum asking for people how to lose weight, i had a big weight problem, i was 117kg/266 pounds. Then later on i found out about durianrider and i went vegan and now a year later i weight 88kg. He is a very big inspiration to me and hes a very good rider.

I want to keep on going and lose more weight, i am really interested in freeride mountain biking and such but where i live there are not any good tracks for such things, so i was wondering on buying a road bike, right now i have a Scott 60 which is a budget hybrid bike... It's just a regular bike okay. So i was thinking i want a road bike instead, they look so cool and when i see people riding them it seems so effortless. I know they are very fit and the bikes are also pretty lightweight, Ofcourse roadbikes range from 500€ - 5000€ or even more, so there are aluminium bikes and fancy carbon bikes. I dont want to be in a gym or go running, i want to do what interests me, and i think biking of any kind is awesome and i think more people should dump there cars and start using bikes more, even though i am a huge car enthusiast.

Im still chubby from the outside but whenever i see people ride roadbikes they always have spandex and the whole combo, i would look ridiculous in spandex, so im wondering if it's weird to ride a roadbike without spandex? If my memory isn't lying to me i think i have never seen anyone ride a roadbike with everyday shorts and sneakers, but i may be wrong. Im 6'1/187cm. What do you think would be a good beginner roadbike?

http://www.hawaii.ee/index.php?id=86660&product=1851 This costs 600€, Is it good? The page is in estonian but you get the overall view. Oh by the way which is overall a better bike maker, Scott or Trek? Thanks everyone, i know this is kind of a long thread but i couldn't stop

One clothing option is to wear the spandex/lycra under 'regular' clothes, because you get the benefit of the lycra (i.e. protection from chafing on long rides, and the muscle support), without people seeing you wear it . I can't really advise you on a suitable choice of road bike, though, as I only just bought my 1st road bike in November, after many years of using a touring bike. I can tell you that the road bikes are faster than tourers/hybrids/MTBs, etc. because they're lighter and more aerodynamic (although my touring bike is faster on the down hills!).

Congratulations on the weight loss: about 4.5 years ago I dropped from about 105kg to 85kg in 6 months, partly due to resuming cycling after a bit of a break, so I can relate to your story .

Thanks Victor, Which is better tho, Lycra or Spandex? About the weight loss, i problably would be pretty fit already but i constantly fell off the wagon and started eating wrong things and excess salt, sometimes even dairy and meat, Now please dont get me wrong im not judging anyone for eating meat or dairy my point is that vegan was the path i chose so i wanted to stay on it but i was constantly undereating and then binged on thing that weren't on my program. So 28 KG in a year isn't that great.

That Scott weighs about 9.4kg so im not sure how lightweight that is considered, i remember watching a video made by trek and they made some bike that weighed 1kg or so, im not sure if it was a road bike or a mountain bike tho.

A good pair of cycling shorts (or longs!) is pretty essential IMO if you're doing anything over 90 mins in the saddle. As said, you can wear an ordinary baggy pair of shorts over them.

The top is less significant and if you wear a cotton t-shirt then most of the gen public won't notice what you're wearing on the bottom half. They do keep you drier though - a cotton t-shirt will be sodden with sweat after all that exercise. And cycling tops do have those practical back pockets.

Well putting cycling shorts under regular shorts seems like a good idea, i dont really ride over 90 minutes right now since i have a mountain bike and doing long miles on asphalt with it is not really the most comfy thing, or i might have the wrong bike size but i doubt. Right now i only do about 30 min rides.
