Yes that's right, I have no problem using the small chainring the problem I find is shifting mid climb from big to little means there's about a second of mad leg spinning, which isn't any help on the busy traffic heavy hills I'm going up. Basically I like to keep the speed constant.

It wont take long to get used to. Especially if you know the route. I used to have a similar problem and never really wanted to drop to the small chainring as it was too much of a drop off in power, but when you anticpate, chainring down, click, rear gear up, click, you'll get into a rhythm in no time!

I'm not trying to sound patronising or rude in any way shape or form but it sounds like you could do with practicing your gear changes a bit to get used to the different ratios particularly when it comes to dropping down at the front and up at the back. You'll soon get into the swing of rattling up and down the gears whilst still keeping the same cadence and you'll start to anticipate the change and click it in just before you need to in no time. Practice on the flat though not up hill, your mechs wont thank you if you start trying to change gears while you're straining up a hill and it sounds bloody awful too.

I find that a thrust of the hips up the hill can provide enough momentum to make changing more mechanically sympathetic. Generally, I will be in the small chainring early on with a bit of planning before it gets too difficult.

If you've got a 53 big ring that's no ring to climb in. If I know I'm going to need the small ring by the top of a climb I shift into it at the bottom or in the early stages when speed is still relatively high, moving a couple of sprockets at the back (might need to shift three on a compact). Then as the speed drops further I work up the cassette until I get to the top or run out of gears before I run out of hill (waaa!!) at which point there's only the painful way.
