Well, i'm in a bit of a conundrum. I have a Carerra Kraken which i've had for about 4/5 years, so its been through all sorts and I love it. But the chain has completely packed in and should cost around £160 to fix it (I think). Now, my first thought was, 'oh new shiney bike time'. But as I was trying new bikes etc, none of them felt right. Either way, i'll be keeping my Kraken as it's always been there.

So, should I fix it or get a nnew bike. I really can't decide. Thanks.

What type of chain are you getting? Platinum? chains are cheap!

I'd guess the OP means the drivetrain. Chainset, BB, cassette and chain perhaps?

To the OP, you've clearly said you'll be keeping it, so you might as well keep it rideable as you love the thing so much.

If you mooch around places like fleabay I'd suspect you'd be able to pick bits up here and there to fettle it on the cheap

Funny isn't it, the things we get attached too?^_^

I was in a similar situation earlier this year, drive train completely shot and was considering getting a new bike. I decided that a new bike wasn't a great idea in January so had the work done for just over a hundred quid. I thought I'd wait until the weather improves to invest in a new bike; got snowed on today so it won't be just yet.

Yeah, it's the whole set that needs replacing, im no good with all these technical terms. The problem with keeping it and fixing it is, that it is rather heavy as it is an older model and other things will slowly go wrong. I am leaning towards just fixing it, but there are so many other new fancy pants bikes which look great, but tey just aren't my Kraken :smile:Can't help but get attached to a bike, was off Santa that one its so old. XD Thanks for the replies.

Is that parts cost or parts and labour at the LBS. Sounds like the latter. If so, time to learn to do these things yourself Thomo.

Perfect timing in fact. Get your new bike and the then you've got the perfect training mule with your Kraken to get to grips with some D.I.Y. mechanicalisms, (you know what I mean ).

Remember that when your learning new bike related fettling things, both CC and YouTube are your friends

Fix it, no point keeping a bike that doesn't work.

If you want to do it on the cheap, then ditch the gears.

A second/back-up/Winter/pub/hack bike is always useful.
