Not wishing to bring up the 'what's your favourite book of all time' stuff, I wonder if there's ever been a contemporary book thread on here? If not, I'd like this to be the start of one, mainly because I've just read a superb new book called 'The Good Liar' which is the first novel by Nicholas Searle. In some reviews, he's been compared to John Le Carre and this book, which I bought on a whim so had no pre-conceptions, is different in chronology as it's actually told backwards. It really is terrific stuff and very well written leaving you thinking; if this is his first novel, just how good is he going to get?
The last good new book I read before this was 'The Book of Dave' by Will Self and I just can't understand why it isn't regarded as a modern classic but I'm certain it will be reappraised when he dies!
