Might pop past this weekend though. Tricky competition with the National Trust cafe, but I can still see it doing a roaring trade.

You - and they - jest, but my mate Chris, who has been in the trade many years, told me he would never open a bike shop at the top or bottom of a big hill.

Customers planning to arrive by bike may be put off by having to climb the hill either coming or going.

In this case, Box Hill is so famous 'destination' may trump 'gradient'.

Hope so, the guy sounds like he's put a lot of thought and effort into it.

To be fair box hill is stacked with cyclists at the weekends and still busy during the week . The NT Cafe is seriously over priced for a slice of cake and a cuppa so if they get it right people will just go to them .

Oh I agree. Other cafes (and hills) are available in the area. Pilgrim Cycles, at Boxhill and Westhumble Station, for one. Cafe La Creme, a corrugated Citroen van converted to coffee duties is on Ranmore Common on Sundays is another. Ranmore is much more character forming than Box Hill, and not as crowded either.

Can't disagree with either of those comments... although I bloody hate Ranmore as a hill to climb! Just can't get a decent rhythm going . Mind you, it does normally end up being one of the last hills on a usual route taking in Staple Lane, Leith, Whitedown etc, so never much left in the legs by that point
