Hi all,

Really stupid question, but how do I pick the right chain for my bike?

Is there a set size that I buy and remove links as needed or can I simply buy a chain that fits my bike and away she goes?

Cheers

If you have a 10spd bike, look for a 10spd chain. 9spd bike = 9spd chain, etc etc. The chain will almost certainly need shortening before fitting.

Actually can anyone recommend a decent chain brand or are they all pretty much the same?

Also what are the chains with the link that can be pulled apart by hand called?

KMC is a good brand. You will need a chain breaker tool to make the chain the right length.

The joiner is called a quick link and most chains come with these.

Just get the right speed chain as there is upto 8, 9,10 and 11 speed

If you still have the original chain just trim the new one to the same number of links, not necessarily the same length as old chains will stretch. It's the number of links that your need to bear in mind. Also the power link/quick link will also need to be factored for the correct length. I changed my first chain yesterday. Used a Park Tools chain breaker, dead easy. Good luck. Gez
