My brother wants a new chainset so he settled on a cheapo Suntour but it won't drop on to the small chainring. I think the old chainset seems to be constructed so it sits a little more out. My advice to him would be get a new UN55 BB and go from the 122.5mm up to the 127mm as he needs a new one anyway (sounds very dry and gritty).
Does this sound enough to do do the job? I think it only needs a couple more mm so it can drop on to small ring and they don't seem to make them any wider. There's no more available travel on the derailleur and I think part of the problem is the slightly wider seat tube compared to my bike on which I had no problems fitting a similar chainset.
