If you do go down the Brompton route, and want a cheaper secondhand option let me know.
I used to do a bike-train-bike commute so bought a 6-speed Brompton for it. However now I live a few miles closer to work and so just cycle straight there.

Which means my poor little green Brompton sits at home unwanted and unloved and in need of a good home.
And given my wife is always complaining about the number of little used bikes I have, it would come with a very reasonable price tag.

Pm me, if you're interested

I presume they don't let you park a car either - otherwise I'd be moaning about being allowed to park my car, but not my bike!

For 6 miles I'd definitely look at the Brompton and either SS or 3 speed and put your name down for a full bike space at the same time. The Brompton just opens up so many more options for you, mixed mode commuting, popping to the shops and going out in the evening. As Night Train says just get a Brompton cover/bag so that you can leave it under your desk wet or dry.

if you go the brompton route, nip in wilkinsons and get one of those JML door mats that trap dirt, that should help keep any muck from the commute on the mat and stop people complaining.

Folding bike - Mezzo (longer reach than a Brompton and better catches) :

Get the lightweight cover and the bag for the rear rack.

Even better - get a DIMPY bag from IKEA. Perfect fit - the saddle doesn't stick out to give you away - its much tougher and at £2.99 or so - a real bargain for an expensive Brommie.

On the other hand because it is an office don't assume it is safe. Thieves are everywhere but as they are unlikely to be sporting an industrial pair of bolt cutters a discrete cable lock secured to your desk should be sufficient.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

I've kept a Brompton in the office - unsecured, fully visible - for 15 years, and have never felt the need to lock it to anything.

Hi,

Cheapside you say? I may have a solution for you

There is an underground carpark on the London Wall - just a short walk from Cheapside - it runs the length of the road almost.

It's free for motorcycles, but also free for cycles and has secure racks that you can chain your bike to.

It's also manned 24/7 and the staff are always friendly.

That would be my choice - you could also look at insuring your bike for peace of mind. Mine are, so I use the public racks near St Pauls.

There have been at least 2 bikes stolen in the last few months on the particular rack I use, but they both had rubbish cable locks - a good d-lock will help keep your bike a lil bit more secure.

Anyway, check out the carpark at London Wall

Had a look around at the bikes locked up today and gave me some confidence that I can avoid getting mine nicked. Thanks to Nich for his suggestion to use the car park at London Wall which is just a few minutes walk (and all the other comments).

I reckon:

rusty old 3-speed
+
manned car park
+
kryptonite evolution 4 d-lock
+
kryptonite evolution 4 mini d-lock

will not be nicked.

Let me know if you think otherwise. I'll have to see if I can stand commuting on this old steed but I think it will be ok for 6 miles.
