New Doctor Who series tonight....

last time I watched Dr Who was in the Tom Baker days.

Is it any good these days?

Odd starting episode. The daleks kidnap the Doctor to rescue what they recognise as 'genius' from an asylum they can't destroy because of a force field?. Then when the force field is shut off, they blow the planet to smithereens, but previously said they couldn't bring themselves to do it as they can't destroy 'pure hate', which they worship?. The plot had more holes than your average golf course.

Anyway, no prizes for spotting the girl who didn't realise she was actually a dalek, is going to be the new assistant:

I thought I'd give it a go last night and I was disappointed. I'm very much from the Pertwee/Baker/Davidson and just can't get into this new batch (although Tennant's Doctor was ok). I then reminded myself that I'm watching a kids TV programme and the last time it scared me, well I was a kid. But I'm sure the shows in the 70s and 80s were better despite the lower budget and low-fi special effects.

We still haven't got our head around Matt whatshisname as the Doctor. 'Our' Doctors were from the Pertwee/Baker era, although I did rather like David Tennant. The 70s & 80s Doctor Whos were much better, wobbly sets and all. I was properly scared by some of the stories. Used to watch it from the dog basket, with the dog still in it. I could hide behind him.
I might watch next week, then again, I might watch the cycling instead. On reflection, I should have stuck with the cycling last night.

This series they are bringing back the weeping angels, again, or so I have been told. Shame really cos the 'Blink' episode was a cracker. I didn't actually like the storyline when they brought the angels back.

Tennant was a very good doctor, i even liked Ecclestone but the current one is dire.

Didnt watch it so no idea but from the sounds of it i didnt miss much.

ecclestone was brilliant, he was a very good doctor, tennant was also quite good but the story lines really did him no justice.
new chap is ok i guess in a clueless sort of way which honestly i've never thought of the doctor as clueless.
i have to say tho that all of the new ones aren't a patch on many of the older episodes, but we do have to point out that not all the old episodes were that good either.

personal hates for the new shows is the way they've dealt with daleks and cybermen. the sontaran i actually thought weren't bad.
i miss UNIT being a decent feature and i'm rather sick of the world almost blowing up.

You miserable lot ! I thought it was a great start to the new run. Some great twists and turns along the way, with the biggest twist right from the start - the Doctor captured by his oldest enemies, then turns out they need him for a quest (cue quest plot), then building up menance (almost base under siege plot) as the decrepit Daleks come to life, and though expecting the telgraphed final twist, it asolutley wasn't what I'd expected at all. Add in a couple of references to past battles (Spirodon, Excillon etc) to keep the sad old geeks happy (not that i'm one, oh no)- And I think Smith's Doctor has real greatness, and one of very few to convey him as alien, rather than merely a man.
It's not up there with truly great stories like Blink and the gas mask one, but very good start. and it's far better than the more silly ones - tardis towing the earth back home for instance.

Regarding plot holes, don't think it was too bad on that front - bearing in mind it's not intended to be apollo 13 after all.

And remember, quite a few of the "real" doctor who series were pretty ropey - and not just wobbly sets, which didn't really matter to be honest. Some of of the fag end of mcoy's tenure were very very poor indeed, despite mcoy being a fine actor, and a fine doctor, but he couldn't rescue some of them. Even Pertwee (my doctor as it were) is only going through the motions on of few of them.



Oh well, each to their own.

I watched it with the kids - we loved it!

I even watched it again on the iplayer the next day. This helped connect some bits I'd not picked up first time through.

I'm sorry, but I think your memory’s playing tricks on you. I think you need to all sit down and watch a whole episode of any of the older series and you will see that the old Doctor Who were truly truly dreadful, plot holes you could hid planets in. Wobbly sets even more wobbly scripts.
The only thing they had going for them back then was the companions, which great when you’re a 13 year old boy. The doctor is not much better now, but it’s a kid’s programme, and when watched with that in mind is much better than it was.

That's a bit harsh I think. I recently raided my brother's collection for some Tom Baker era stories and while I accept that there are some really bad ones, there are also ones like "City of Death", The Talons of Weng Chiang", "The Stones of Blood" and "Genesis of the Daleks" which still stand up to scrutiny.
