New experience for me this morning

OK, so I roll onto Howard Road in Southampton, heading towards the east at the Hill Lane junction. Big queue of approx 10 cars, so I join the back of the queue. I know the phasing of the traffic lights like the back of my hand so I know that I wont have to wait to long looking at the current signal phase. I can also usually keep with the queue until I have reached the next lights

There is an advanced stop line at the signals, with narrow approach cycle lane for maybe 50m meters., however I didn't use it as I prefer not to have 12 impatient cars behind me for the next narrow bit of road.

So a large white van pulls up behind me. Passenger window comes down and guy shouts "There's a cycle lane to your left." I say "yes I know" (crap response). He says something like "well move over then". Queue still on red. I didnt respond (what I should have said was the cycle lane is not mandatory). So after 5 seconds or so I think, F**k it, and ride down the cycle lane to the ASL. I gave the van driver a cheeky wave as I did. I got two cars from the front when the light changed, I merged with the queue as it started moving and carried on my journey

I think WVM got stuck behind the next red.

I've had people beep at me a few times approaching the back of ques, I've turned round for them to be gesticulating for me to move to the side of the road. My response has usually been a shoulder shrug, as I think "What's the hurry, where are you going to go?"

Maybe a little cheeky but I like it when you can cycle up to the stationary cars, slow down and point to the back of the que for them, 'there you go that's where you stop' and then carry on past the que giving a little wave as you go On the few occasions I have done this is has resulted in more beeping and hand waving from the driver

To my knowledge I've only had the 'get in the cycle lane' once to my face, ironically that was when there was no cycle lane there not that I would have used one anyway at that point, too many parked cars

I once had "get on the cycle path" while waiting at some roadworks in the middle of the countryside to which my response is "I can't see a path, let alone a cycle path".

The ASL next to the common up by the cemetary? If so its a filterlane, not recommended to filter there unless theres a lot of cars, etc and they'll be snarled up.

If its the one at the town end befroe the school, then I take primary through there too. If I see a ped press the button I get off and walk it across and get back on after the crossing. Very funny, you can see the confusion in some people's faces like a "he's cheating!" look.

Riding up Notting Hill one morning I was overtaken by an Audi convertible driven by a portly gentlemen with a very orange, lithe lady passenger 20-30 years his junior. I quickly caught him up and wittily shouted "nice overtaking". My breathing was a bit more laboured than I thought, however, and it actually came accross as a sweaty madman making incoherent grunts at his girlfriend. I felt like a bit of a tool...

Yep I do, tis not to bad for the bike really, and I enjoy a trip out to the new forest and back

The ASL next to the common up by the cemetary? If so its a filterlane, not recommended to filter there unless theres a lot of cars, etc and they'll be snarled up.

Ahh yes I know that one well. Always cars sat in the ASLs on the whole junction. The Hill Lane bit as you come down past the pub in the cyclelane, from the common end, always has cars in it.

Yeh i've noticed that too. To be fair the paint has really faded on some of them, they could do with a nice green bit of road surface to highlight it too.

The Hill Lane CL is very narrow too. Could do with widening
