As someone who trained as an industrial designer I can assure yous that the competition wasn't about the best cycle storage farcility, it was about who was the best 'industrial designer'. Designed by and judged by people who don't ride bikes. Style over substance. As ever. Utter pish.

Remind me a bit of this story we put up on Velo Vision recently:

http://www.miltoncanadianchampion.com/news/article/247029

A pair of design students, one of whom is quoted as saying:

"I’ve never actually cycled to school or work, but could see doing so if I had something like this to make it more convenient.”

have designed a bike trailer that folds up when not in use, so you don't have to tow something wide behind you that's empty when you aren't using. It folds up, and sits over the rear rack. So you can't use the rack. So you could just not have the trailer, and carry panniers and a couple of bungies....

Not only that, but the prototype (there were better pics but the link doesn't go to them now) was pretty well jerry-built out of plywood with a plastic bag stapled on for the carrying bit. I know a lot of cyclists who'd come up with something much more professional, and usable... But this thing won an award!

They're all tossers, we've had three or four design students come on here in the last six months asking us for input to their projects only to eff off without so much as a thank you let alone a look at their work. Ninety percent of the people on my design course were tossers. Including me possibly.
