If hes doing nothing more than surfing the web chromebook would be ok. That being said the Chromebook is a potato. It will outdate its self next week.

That's a ridiculous comment. The chromebook is based on the chrome browser which is constantly evolving and all updates are automatically applied. How will it "outdate itself"?

I just got my mum (67) a Samsung Chromebook, it's simple and does all she wants which is effectively browsing the web and email. There is a good deal on at the moment (until 3rd September) where you will get a Samsung Mini smartphone (trade in value circa. £45) which brings the price of the base model Chromebook well under £200.

As I said if its only for browsing its ok anything more and you have a problem.
Unless google worked out a magical way to change components through updates?

Though I am sure they are not intended to be. I found some of these postings rather patronizing. I am 70 this month and though I am not a geek and find that it takes a little longer to grasp, some of the newer concepts of computing I get by and some things are certainly a lot easier to grasp now than they used to be, when I started out with my old Dragon. <snip>

Im 32 and a Microsoft Certified IT Professional and I entirely agree with you! The pace of change at the moment is hard to keep up with...

The hardware will never need updating it's basically a web browser and has as much RAM and storage (cloud) as you will likely ever need. And at under £200 it becomes a consumable device. You cannot upgrade any tablet which makes a £500 idevice a much worse proposition, and any upgradeable laptop will either a) cost much more new or b) cost much more when you start upgrading components.

So, the Chromebook is only as much a "potato" as every other device out there at the price point. Hence your comment is still a bit silly.

I have not even seen a chromebook, so I am in no position to judge. Are they 100% cloud storage?
No they all have some onboard storage, but it's not usually very much.
