New kitchen setup - what would you do?

We're building a new kitchen and the world is my lobster.

Should I get ceiling speakers embedded in the ceiling, wall speakers embedded in the walls, or regular speakers sitting on the cabinets or on brackets? Or what?

This is the spec, if it helps:

By the time you've got the oven fan going, pots and pans bubbling on the hob and the extractor fan going full blast you won't be able to hear anything. So it doesn't matter.

regular speakers IMO... you can put 'em (almost) where you want, move them at a later date without leaving vacant holes on the walls or ceiling.

If you kitchen is going to be a disco
In the ceiling - great - ceiling will oscilate and add noise/interference

If its classical - Speakers on a bracket

If its the radio -speakers on a table in the corner


Speakers vibrate/oscilate - that how they work
- stop the vibration from travelling - improves the sound quality
(there is also the quality of sound equipment factor as well)

Do you share walls with neighbours? If yes, I would avoid speakers on shared walls/ceilings ....

I use put the combined turner/amp/CD player on top of the fridge and the speakers are on a shelf above them. Works OK for me. I did fork out extra for a quiet cooker hood/extractor - a De Dietrich - clears the steam quietly and effectively and lets me hear my music.

I'd opt for free standing speakers too, good for future upgrades.

Mine are on top of the wall cabinets on my kitchen with the wiring, mostly, hidden.

Will steam bother the speakers? If so, I'd avoid mounting them in the ceiling!

we have radio/cd on the fridge I cook with bluetooth headphones though as I can hear them over whatever machines I'm using and don't piss of anyone else in the house

Don't fanny about - purpose made in-ceiling speakers, your amp hidden in a cupboard with adequate ventilation and a Sonos ZP90 unit to stream music from your PC. Can be controlled with any smartphone or iPod Touch via an app and you won't spoil the look of your new kitchen with speakers on wall brackets which, frankly, look like a dogs breakfast and won't sound as good as a speaker designed for use in kitchens!
We use in-ceiling because they have much greater dispersion characteristics than in-wall or cabinet designs. Use in-wall if you wish to augment a TV.
Quality brands like B&W(British) KEF(British) Monitor Audio(British) and Focal(French) will make a nice noise and not mind heat/steam - buy the best you can afford - at least £200 a pair and bigger is better.

And yes, I do this for a living!
