Looking for some advice on rims. I’m looking to get some new ones for my current hybrid on 26"s. It has a Bontrager Ranger on the front and Mavic XM317 on the rear at the moment with Shimano 475 hubs, but they’ve taken a few bashes over the year so it seems like time. The other motivation is to change tyres. I currently have 1.5 slicks on there but previously I was using Conti Gatorskins at 1.125" - I loved the feel of tyres that narrow but they were a nightmare to get on and off. Changing a tyre on the roadside was a stressful, tool-breaking, knuckle-skinning affair. Having looked at the specs of the Mavic it suggests 1.5" tyres as the min so I suspect therein lies the problem - my rims are not really designed to handle such skinny tyres, which I guess introduces other issues.
So I'm looking to get some new rims to handle tyres of the 1-1.15" range. Does anyone have a favourite rim/trye combo for narrow 26s? I'd be happy to go with 1.125 gatorskins again but down to 1" is tempting.
