Interesting, I live very close to the Swallow bikes shop... I love their Steel bikes. I am considering getting one for my n+1.

Do you live nearby?
No Phixion, I live in Greater Manchester.

I read a lot of monthly cycling mags & there have been some great feature articles on steel frame builders over the last 12-18 months inc Swallow.

I really love (but can't yet afford) the idea of a custom made frame from an Artisan.

There are a couple of guys on here who own or have ordered custom made bikes from Rourke & Woodrup.

I particularly liked the articles I read on Feather & Swallow (cyclist magazine) I think it was.

Go pay Swallow a visit, I would love to read about it all if it works out for you.

If you have three and a half grand, why not buy a half-way decent bike for about £900 (say a Cinelli Experience) and ride it for a few thousand miles. In so doing, you will learn what features matter to you personally and you will be better placed to make a decision.
My first road bike cost me £700 and I rode it for two and a half years. When looking for a new one, I considered splurging £1500 but a friend let me try out his son's bike. I just loved it. I bought the same model for £50 less than my first bike and it's a whole lot more fun.

Go with a ROSE xeon with Di2, don't care wht size is best for you, buy a 59" frame. When you have blown your wad and decided that cycling isn't really for you and that you aren't getting your monies worth drop me a line, will pay upto 25p in the pound on your initial investment^_^
