according the the blurb ive read, 9 speed cassettes are wider than 10 speed ones so you would not be able to fit a 9 speed onto a freehub designated "10 speed only". however, 11 speed cassettes are wider than 9 speed ones so you can fit a 9 speed onto an 11 speed freehub with the right spacers.

so this seems to be in direct contradiction to planet x's reply, and im not the expert, but that is what ive read.

both my 9 speed cassettes sit on 11 speed freehubs with a spacer.

That was my understanding, I asked for some clarification in my second email. I read in a maintenance book that any modern style 11 speed hub could be fitted with spacers to work with older gearing. My concern would be that the wheel wouldn't fit into the rear dropouts, although this doesn't seem to be an issue for most people.

The wheel shouldn't be wider than a wheel with a 9 or 10 speed hub.

Most non Shimano hubs will accept 11 speed cassettes as they have been slightly wider than Shimano, hence needing a spacer.

Buy the wheels, and if stuck, just order a spacer from an online supplier.

Okay, Planet X repeated the same in another email and a guy from the Sheffield shop said the same. I really like the 30mm deep rims on wheels aesthetically, and so I was looking at wheels like that; also my budget is tighter now so the cheaper the better.

I looked at the Shimano R501s and they seem good as a budget option, I like the looks of the RS31's but being 16/20 I fear that this will eliminate the possibility of having a pannier rack due to the strain on the back wheel. Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

Right, since at 75kg I'm not a particularly heavy rider and I don't plan to have the panniers at any time other than when I cycle dutch style to school on good roads, I'm going for the RS31s.

Thanks again for your help.

I know I'm dragging this thread up but though it may clear up anyone else's concerns over the planet X wheels and the 10/11 speed issue. They are in fact compatible with 8 speed and upwards with the right spacing. Hope this helps others
