New Saddle Before Long Ride?

Folks, I'm in 2 minds over this, I have the chance to pop up to Sigma sports in Kingston tomorrow. With the intent of being measured up, and having fitted, a new Specialised Toupe saddle. I'm still using the stock saddle that came with my bike but comfort diminishes as rides get longer, also have a couple of saddle sores, right side only for some reason.

Bearing in mind I'm doing the ride to the coast tomorrow night, should I do this first or leave til after the ride?

If I were you I would stick with what you have for tomorrow's ride and then fit the tope afterwards. Saddle fits are very personal and you may not find the toupe to your liking however if you end up with a 143 in black (not gel) that you really cannot get on with I will take it off your hands :hyper:

Agree, sell it to FFFF.

About the sores on RH only. Check your leg lengths.
Not many people are identically symetrical.

Adjust you seat height for the shorter leg.

'Normal' people could be up to 12mm different without knowing.

In fact, drop the seat height by 5mm and see how it is on the ride. You might save yourself the expense of the new saddle.

Thanks Jim, had been thinking on these lines as I know my arms aren't equal and nor are my feet.

I've decided to go for it, as my current saddle is a bit on the wide side, as I'm planning on a century tomorrow, I feel narrower will be better. Impulsive, me?

Try this.

Lie down on the floor face up and stretch both your legs out straight with your heels on the floor shoulder width apart, and your soles flat against a wall.

Oh, firstly grab a spirit level.

Place the spirit level across your Iliac points, the knobbly bits on the front of your pelvis just above the groin fold.

Keeping the bubble in the spirit level central, have someone measure from the wall to each of your Iliac points.

When you set the seat height, take off half the difference of the measurements.

Another gem of bikebuilder's folklore..;)

This is a 'home method'. You haven't got time to get an X-Ray this evening at your BUPA hospital.

And then try this.

While you are in the supine position, place the spirit level from one Iliac point to the diagonally opposite, highest point of your thoracic cage.

If your stomach won't allow the spirit level to lie across the two points, guess what ;)

Well, new saddle held up very well, got the Spesh Alias 155mm. When removing the old saddle I did realise that there was wear on the right side only. Guess what!!! it was slightly off line with the nose pointing to the right of the top tube. So got one of my boys to line it up this time, better eyes etc. Did 106 miles on it and no chaffing problems at all. Bit harder on the sit bones at times, but not enough to cause discomfort. They'll toughen up and, as I lose weight, will receive less pressure anyway.

However, so intent was I on getting saddle on straight etc, that I totally neglected to match rails position. Aperitif picked up on fact that my knees were back of optimum for pedalling. I was also aware that I may have to raise new saddle slightly as was less padded and bulky than the old. Though wasn't sure as this would be offset by how much I sank in to each one. This all resulted in reaching Southend with a bit of lower back pain(slight) and quite a bit of pain in right knee.

Aperitif adjusted saddle with me, so raised about 5mm and, over 2 adjustments, moved forward on rails by 25-30mm. I suffered on return to London but some painkillers finally kicked in and I finished fairly well. Knee was sore last night but much better this morning. Went out for a 5 mile tester and no pain in knees, back or butt/nether regions.....very happy. Also made some further adjustments to handlebars via adjustable stem.

Thanks to all for the help, as usual, god knows how much I'd go through if it wasn't for the advice on here.

Failing that, stick your arse in a baking tray of flower.

sores only on the right side? check saddle orientation i.e. make sure it's not pointing left or right but dead centre towards the stem. Sounds silly but it can be sligthly out without being that noticeable.

thanks Bonj, and that was the answer, just my ageing eyes were the problem, my son spotted it straight away. All fixed now.
