Just to highjack, What is a good cheap saddle for a 8m commute that won't hurt the old base of spine??

I have this same pain and you should be wary of this. You may be doing nothing to the base of your spine directly as, unless you're constructed differently to me you don't put your coccyx onto your saddle (I double checked when I was riding along). So I asked the physio I'm seeing at the mo for a cycling induced knee problem. Pressure on my sit bones by using a gel saddle that seems to now be thin on gel for too long has given me the problem. He said this could well have caused the problem and recommended stretching the piriformis muscle that runs through your backside.
