I suspect the plastic part Milzy is talking about is the thumb wheel part of the adjuster, the threads will be metal...I assume.

Yep and trying to get the adjuster to turn without taking the tension off the cable (by pushing the mech in a bit while increasing tension) could easily break that.

Convenience, I can make adjustments without the need for a small spanner, especially if out on a ride.

I just weighed my 8/9 mm double open ended spanner (the one that fits my brake cable adjuster locknuts too)

Not bothered about the weight, I carry enough weight above the saddle, but one less thing to carry suits me never the less.

I agree the new design does appear to be inferior but this week whilst doing a roadside adjustment I realised if I pull up and turn it works perfectly and very smooth too

Yebbut, looks plastic, infers you're not sure either Surely someone must have a definitive answer. If it is, I'd be making it my business to change them at the first opportunity...for something a bit better quality.
