I've seen several recently, usually wearing your standard security guards/builders/carriageway repair mans waterproof hi-vis coat while cycling (on the inevitable full-sus Halfords special) to/from work. They are no more visible to the motorist than your bog-standard pitch-black ninja, generally because they are scudding along in the gutter, but the worst part is they think they are fine since they are wearing a hi-vis coat.
Anyone else encountered these types?

Least they made an effort.

A 100% improvement on 'black hoodie'. Bog standard hi-viz jackets often have lots of scotch-lite tape sewn on - so they light up quite well when bathed in car headlight - although not very comfortable if traveling long distances.

Seems a bit harsh. You've just described an average bloke going to work on a bike. Shouldn't this be encouraged, instead of sub-categorised and profiled? B)

[Edit: Ah, they have no lights? Gotcha ]

How do you know what they're thinking?

Yes tonight - luckily my light picked up the reflectives - but I was a bit confused at first till I could see more clearly that he had a dog on a lead by his side running along the road and where there should have been lights looked to be a dog bowl?

Saw a woman tonight who was hugging the gutter with no reflectors, no rear light, a weak front green light and a hi viz strap that was covered by her backup.

If you can see them then surely the hi-viz is doing it's job! Same with the 'ninjas'. It's amazing how many people see them.
Yeah but maybe there's loads out there that are so good nobody can see them, hence they don't get talked about:smile:
Good day today lights wise only saw 1 guy with no lights but I see him most days coming towards me but on the pavement.
Saw plenty with decent quality ones too.

Should have explained better. They wear hi-vis and they see this as an exemption from having to use lights. And I know what they are thinking because if you are unlucky enough to see one turn at a junction it's obvious from their road positioning that they are sure they can be seen as plain as day. Even in car headlights, you usually pick up the reflective strips at the last second, usually because the jacket is smegged up!
Yes, they are better than your proper stealth ninja, but only just.

I'd rather if they have no lights that they have something on which makes it easier to see them.

I almost had a nasty collision with a ninja.

Yep. I see one every night on the Ledbury bypass, which is unlit. I saw him tonight and turned my truck headlights off to try and make the point that he's next to invisible, but I don't think he got it. I have no doubt someone will squash him flat one day and I shan't be wasting any sympathy on him. I suspect he works at the same place I do, too: if I knew which department he worked in I might go and have a word.
