Sustrans routes are very variable with the previously mentioned barriers and surfaces varying from good to incredibly bad I avoid any route I don't know or have a personal recommendation from another triker for.

I'd second Byegad's advice: only follow a Sustrans route if you have a personal recommendation for it. Many of them are dreadful for two wheels and even worse for three.
