new tyre valves

Hi, does anyone ahve any tips for them new fangled tyre valves? i know i'm probably being a bit ditzy but i can't get the hang of it!? I have got the adaptor, still not really working - are they supposed to work with car pumps with the adaptor or am i gonna have to buy a new pump (on top of new bike and adaptor etc etc?)

They didn't warn me at the shop when i bought it!

Sorry but which new fangled tyre valves are you talking about? There are basically two types of valve used with bike tyres (see here) Presta and Schrader. Can you tell us which valve it is you are talking about and maybe we can offer more help.

Some of these valves can be a bit of a mystery at first.
Maybe the shop people will be pleased to help you, a practical demonstration is probably the best way to get to know the right way to do things.
