New Tyres Question

Hi All,

I currently ahve 700 x 38c schawlbe marathon plus tyres and i am going to go down to 700 x 28 but dont want to put the marathon plus on again due to the weight factor.

So my question is, what is the best tyre for puncture protection, apart from marathon plus, that gives me more speed and is lighter as i want to increase my ave MPH by about 1.5 to 2.5 miles so if anyone has any ideas out there let me know, oh by the way i ride a Specialized Crosstrail Disc.

I would be willing to risk punctures, about 1 or 2 per year for speed but want a good strong long lasting tyre

I've had good experiences with 35mm Marathon Supremes: they're currently up to 5000 miles and I've had 1 puncture. Mine are the folding version and they're a doddle to fit and remove, grip really well on wet roads and they're fairly light. If they were available in 25mm versions, I'd put them on my road bike.
Identical tyres on my GF's bike have done ~2800 miles and they've also only had one puncture.
We've used them on roads, glass strewn cycle-paths and gravel trails.
Downsides; they're quite expensive and they're rubbish in mud or on wet grass (but which slick isn't ?).

Conti GatorSkin are light, pretty nippy, and not prone to visitations IME.
Schwalbe Kojak are also light, and are as smooth as a freshly-ironed baby's bottom.

Schwalbe Durano get good reviews too.

Normal Marathons would save nearly 400g per tyre if you do go down to 28's
Still have a decent puncture guard too.

What's your average speed?

Note that going from 700x23c Michelin Pro 3 Race to 700x28c M+ reduced my ave speed by less than 0.5mph at 19.5-22mph ave speed.

+1 for gator skins, I have cleared 3k miles on mine and still going.
