The last time I bought some wellies, there was a choice of black or black or green (if you wore a waxed coat).

I now need some new Wellington type of boots. A quick look on-line shows that there are trillions of styles.
Unfortunately, Paddington Bear wellingtons are not available in my size, or that would be the end of matter.

I have seen what are described as snow boots. They look like a Wellie boot on the lower part, and a more flexible fabric part above the ankle to the knee. Some have a fleece lining. That sounds warm and cosy, but if it gets wet, will it will take a long time to dry out?

Can you get lightweight ones? I ask this because if I take a winter holiday in Austria, I would want to pack them.
Or would it be better to sturdy heavy ones? I would use them to walk a few miles in snowy conditions, so they need to be comfortable, oh... and price is a major consideration as well.

I think I need to add, that unlike some people, I do not have thin legs.

And yes, I have looked in Boots, but they do not sell Wellies. I know I would need to try them on with extra socks etc, so would buy them locally, but I would like to ask people's opinions. Thank you

I sympathise with you Speicher - getting Wellies that fit can be a swine.

I've just bought some lined wellies, no more cold feet!

The real answer are Deri Boots, but you only seem to get them online now and most shop assistants haven't even heard of them. I won't buy footwear online as fit is imperative.

These are described as warm moon boots, and the tops are adjustable. I am guessing that the Derry boots, which I have just looked up, are more practical.

They're very similar to what I just bought, Speicher. No good if you need to stay waterproof above the ankle (which is where Deri Boots score) but perfect if you are out all day in rain or snow, which is often my lot.

There is NOTHING worse than wet feet.

Smoking Joe, do you mean the warm moon boots are what you are wearing all day in snow? or the Derry boots.

I do not intend to go fishing in them. At my age, I can just about avoid jumping in puddles.

They would be for walking in snow, on probably hard packed snow. From my experience walking in deep snow in Austria, if the snow is over the top of your boots, it is impossible to walk far anyway. Their paths and pavements tend to be hard packed snow. Good grip would be essential, with some stability around the ankle. I have lots of liner socks and boot socks for warmth. I find Wellingtons very tiring to walk in for any distance.

From my house to shops etc is about two mile round trip, so they need to be comfortable and practical, taking them on a winter walking holiday with me, is a bonus.

They are what I will be wearing all day in the snow, I haven't road tested them yet as I only bought them on Christmas eve. The rubber waterproofed bottom is high enough to keep you dry (it finishes above the ankle) as long as you don't cross any streams and they feel comfortable to wear.

They have a nice grippy sole too, and as a six-foot + type I'm fecked if I can stay upright in shoes on the ice.

PS

Less of the Moon Boot, Speicher. The outdoor shop I got mine had them under lined wellies, we don't want people thinking we are into eighties crap fashion
