Ok, still a relative newbie but next year I am aiming for,

1/ to cover 3000 miles

2/ Get faster and fitter by loosing 2 stone, average 17 mph rather than 14

3/ Cut car usage to a bare minimum, absolutely only when I need to

4/ Keep injury free

5/ Get some kind of nice road bike

6/ Rebuild my Mountain Bike

10/ do some swimming as well so I dont end up all bottom half ;)

My versions of yours ...

snap - maybe 3500

2/ Get faster and fitter by loosing 2 stone, average 17 mph rather than 14
Well 1 stone will do me, more would be a bonus. Average 15mph rather than 12.

3/ Cut car usage to a bare minimum, absolutely only when I need to
Yep. Want to get rid of my car .. then I might persuade Mrs LC to let me have more bikes. :bicycle:

4/ Keep injury free
Defo!!

5/ Get some kind of nice road bike
Might go for a cyclo-cross in the first instance due to loads of mud and woods on my commute. IF I lose the car.

6/ Rebuild my Mountain Bike
Get another bike other than my Mountain Bike. See 2 and 5.

10/ do some swimming as well so I dont end up all bottom half
I do some swimming; must try to do more.
.. plus ..

11/ Take the family on a small "tour" .. basically a weekend round trip of 25-30 miles involving one night in a B&B or Hostel.

12/ Convince Littlest-LC that the world will not stop if she lets me take the stabilisers off her bike. And that she doesn't need to be towed everywhere.

13/ Get Little-LC to make better use of her gears.

14/ Do a 100km ride.

15/ Arrange the pub crawl round three decent local-ish pubs that I keep talking about.

Try and lose a stone in weight.

Don't fall of my bike.

Convince myself I don't need to buy another bike.

Increase my average speed.

Increase my mileage.

Maybe go on a small tour.

1/ to cover 3000 miles
Hmmm, I don't think I'll be that ambitious. Let's see, I managed 500 miles in half a year. Yes, I know that's pitiful; I know it only equates to me averaging one commute per week for that half of the year. But I'm new to this and unfit too.
So I think I'll aim for 2000 miles - which would mean an average of 2 commutes per week for the whole year.

2/ Get faster and fitter by loosing 2 stone, average 17 mph rather than 14
Two stone would be nice to lose; but having done weight-changes before, I know it's damn expensive having to buy new clothes.
I was averaging 12mph-ish but now that seems to have dropped down  Ever since I got my long trousers, so it must be something to do with them :bicycle: I shall aim for reaching a 14mph average next year (assuming I keep the same bike)

3/ Cut car usage to a bare minimum, absolutely only when I need to
My ultimate aim would be to drive to work on Wednesdays, to swap over clothes, etc, then. And cycle on the other days. Then one Saturday in three I drive to a music group, I have to drive for that unfortunately (public transport means four buses, leaving about 8am on the Saturday for a 2pm start, and getting home some time on the Monday morning [no buses on the Saturday pm or Sunday to get me all the way home!])

4/ Keep injury free
Goes without saying. It's not really a resolution, that one, is it? I mean, unless in other years injury is not something you've tried to avoid...

5/ Get some kind of nice road bike
Erm, maybe get myself something nice in Cycle2Work when our scheme opens in March. Still haven't decided. I think I probably will as my payrise is likely to cover the expense so I can get a new bike and not notice paying for it...still intellectually in love with the Trek 7.5FX but haven't been out to play with it (or any other bikes, for that matter).

6/ Rebuild my Mountain Bike
Or if not 5, just look after the bike I have. An aged Trek 800 which doesn't know what has hit it in the last six months, now it has new tyres, a rack, functioning lights, and a lot of miles to do!

You might surprise yourself Maizie .. I was aiming for 1000 miles this year, which is about 3 commutes per week. In the end I hit that target a bit over halfway through the year and have been doing 5 a week of late. There came a point where I just found it easier / better / nicer / more fun to ride than use the bike. :bicycle:

If you do the four a week target, you'll smash that mileage target.

You can see how my target chasing is going on Cyclogs. I bet I don't make the average speed.

But I'll have fun trying ..

Aye,

50mile runs? - totally out of the question, now, a nice Sunday morning ride

3000miles a year? - heh heh heh! now, 500 per month just commuting

injury free? hmmm... tricky. haven't had a day off sick for 18months

nice road bike? check, thankyou cyclescheme

up early for a 15mile commute? check(still onerous mind) + 15 miles home

Oh, and three stone lighter, BTW

It can be done 'cos I done it! Start easy, get a heart rate monitor to make sure you ride at an even pace and enjoy it.

Well I didn't make it to 3000 (my goal originally this year was 2000), so I am going to set the goal at the 3000 level.

Another 3 day tour would be nice but haven't decided where.

Loose half a stone.

Convince a friend she could cycle over to Chepstow to visit another friends.

Get a bit better at bike maintenance.

Mines nothing as ambitious, it simply to start cycling regularly. To my shame I have had my bike 10 days and only ridden it twice.

Twice at this time of the year, with the current weather isn't bad for a newbie. don't beat yourself up about not getting out. To start with there is no point going out in poor weather as you won't enjoy it, just do it when you want to xx(

My aim is to do my first 100 mile ride & possibly 1 each month :becool:
i'm not going to beat myself up over ave times & weight etc, I've lost 2.5 stone this year, but probably got a little slower due to changing diet. Any more weight loss next year will be a bonus & I dont check my ave speed anymore, but I know my commute has gone from just under an hour, to just over an hour, but I enjoy it more now

2/ Do a metric century a month.

3/ Get out into the North York Moors, perhaps Dales and Northumberland.

Aim High, fail in Style

Should be doable, best I did over the summer was 15.5, its a fairly flat and mostly rural commute, most people get held up by traffic lights, average is crap at the moment due to weather and big bouncy tyres.

Wouldn't know . Fastest I've ever cycled is 18mph. Haven't broken 13mph on a proper cycle in 2008.

Hi guys,
This is a good idea, makes me more likely to do it if I tell people I will do it! :smile:My aims for next year:

Ride over 3500 miles - I've amazed myself by doing over 2000 this year so let's see how far I can go. In fact I should meet that target easily if I get halfway towards my next goal:

Aim towards doing a lot more full commutes on the bike
My full commute is a 32 mile round trip. By September, I want to be able to do either:
- A half commute every day (ride one way, train the other way)
- A full commute at least twice a week
Maybe alternating between these to see which suits the best

Do at least one hundred mile ride - Did a 60 mile this year and actually felt like I could carry on.

Get a nice road bike (persuade Mr M that it will look good in the kitchen as I don't want to leave it outside!)

Learn some basic maintenance (I mean BASIC, p*nt*u*e repair upwards)

Easy eh  Wish me luck!!
