I should have known about this, but I didn't.

Seems NYC has had a congestion charge for a short while and it seems to have been successful so far.

Of course, opposition to these things (like 20 limits, Ulez, London C-zone and LTNs) tends to be ideological rather than evidence/results based, and definitely isn't local. So it faces attempts to reverse it coming from the federal government.

Best of luck to them.

I lived in Manhattan for a couple of years ('86, '87)

Hardly anyone I knew drove a car in Manhattan. Plenty of people lived out in the other boroughs and owned cars, but it was very like London - why would you bring your car to somewhere with terrible parking and awful traffic when there is a good mass transit system?

Cycling was in the same category as rollerblading. For suicidal nutcases only.

Driving in Manhattan is an expensive nightmare but I'm no fan of the MTA either. Fortunately the cycling infrastructure here has improved massively over the last 30 years or so and if you take out the daffodils on ebikes cycling in the city is a dream now

I had a wonderful ride from Greenwich Village to Coney Island in 2011... mostly on the cycle lanes but the road sections didn't feel unsafe.

Looking back I don't think I ever even considered getting a bike when I lived there. There just wasn't a bike shaped hole in my life.

I used to like getting round on buses, which I found reasonably convenient and less stinky and chaotic than the subway. Come to think of it I still prefer a bus ride to the tube in London these days.

That's a favourite destination for a Friday night ride for my friend and I, beer and burger on the boardwalk amongst the chaos

For me it was in homage to The Warriors. :ninja:
