This just says that there will be spaces for bikes and they'll have security locks. No mention as to how many spaces though

Spoke to information desk at Reading station who say all this hasn't been decided yet. I will try their Facebook, apparently they will respond there.

This link is a bit old. I first found it last year, so the trains may not really look like this, but anyway...

There are some pictures of the planned Hitachi IEP trains here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/transportgovuk/sets/72157634690519950/with/9313244146/

This was their answer on Facebook

Hi, Cycle space allocation for the new IEP services has yet to be finalised. Once capacity is finalised, we will announce this to customers.

This might be of use, it's an article from Hitachi Review 2014. http://www.hitachi.com/rev/pdf/2014/r2014_10_105.pdf

It shows a 5 car configuration with capacity to carry 4 bikes (two of those wardrobe like things above). So, depending on how they configure the full trains it will be along these lines, depending of how many of the cars with bike spaces they have. This link says 10 cycles. Another thing that I read stated that the bike storage would have an electronic reservation display. So reservations essential.

(But I don't think they're scheduled to come until 2017, if they've actually finished the electrification by then ... http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/taxpayers-facing-400000-day-bill-6692372 )

You could always try tweeting Hitachi themselves. That's how the RMT found out about the lack of buffet cars: https://www.rmt.org.uk/news/hitachi-tweet-confirms-axing-of-buffet-cars-on-new-iep-train/

Reservations essential would be a bad thing for me. I normally only go one stop, and this works without reservation as I know no one else can get on who already has a reservation. I also don't make a decision about which train to take, or even whether to take a train at all, until the last minute.

I am sure I am not alone in this...

Thought the units were already in this country, in storage, hence the bill for not using equipment supplied.

I just got this email reply, seemingly contradictory to the Facebook response, unless by coincidence this has been decided since I asked

I would like to inform you that the cycle policy will be the same like now in the new Hitachi train. There will be 6 cycle space in High speed train and 2 in diesel trains.

Posters at Bath and Swindon yesterday were announcing the new Great Western policy of compulsory cycle reservations on all their high speed services from Monday 16th May. This means most trains to Swindon where I'm currently working and puts rather a damper on my plans for long summer evening bike-out-train-back rides as I now have to book in advance.
On a Bath University blog I found this :

We would like to encourage pre-booking as much as possible, but we understand that there will be times when booking has not been possible and there is space is available on board.

Station staff have been briefed to allow bikes on board if this is the case. Customers should not therefore have any issues travelling without booking a space for their cycle if there is space on board.

This sounds encouraging but strictly unofficial. Does anyone have any reliable information on what the situation will really be from Monday?
