So, now I have my shiny new NFC enabled phone, what can I do with it? Aside from buying and programming my own nfc tags, the answer would appear to be very little?

Even after asking Google i still don't understand what NFC is or does? could you break it down into simple talk please.

It's peer to peer communication between smartphones or other nfc enabled devices in close proximity without using the phone network or requiring a wiifi hotspot. Theoretically it means that if your bank supports it then you can use it like a credit card in the few establishments that accept it.
That manufacturer of cutting edge gadgets Apple has not included support for it in their latest iphone.
Looking at the 5 coolest uses of nfc it sounds dreadful.

You can use it to make payments, like an Oyster Card and, I think, some Barclaycards now, where you touch it to a reader although it acts there like an unpowered tag.

You can also buy tags to put around your house and program stuff to be driven from your phone / tablet. For instance, with appropriate technology, you could set an RFID tag in your doorways and use the NFC to 'read' where you are in the house and turn on lights, TVs, coffee makers, heating / curtains etc.

Thank you. I don't think i have enough motivation to enable my home and i leave my phone at home (dropped far to offten when out).

Is it expensive for the shop to get the machines inplace?

The last month or so I've seen a lot more contactless payment debit cards. We don't use them of course. The take up and advertising has been very lukewarm. I think it might well be NFC phones that give things a kick. One of the problems is that several banks do do contactless debit cards, but they haven't made it very clear that their policy is to focus on particular cities and regions. For this very reason when I got a replacement card this year, it didn't have contactless payment  . Also not in a hurry to get a phone, but it'd be nice if it had NFC.

There are quite a few places that support contactless payment, it's just the website that you can check on is fairly inaccurate and many places that do do it don't make it very obvious at all.

The machines don't cost much to get in place, it's just there are widely varying opinions on the matter from retailers from yes they are brilliant and speed up queues and encourage purchases right through to they are the work of the devil, unreliable and would scare and confuse customers. M&S recently announced it would roll out to all stores.

Many thanks all, pretty much as I suspected then.
I was just concerned I was missing out on a whole new World but it seems it doesn't quite exist yet.

It's main use will be for small sub £10 or maybe £20 payments at supermarkets etc.
With no pin or card insertion needed it will be more convenient and possibly user friendly.

It is already in a few Asda stores and being rolled out to 11,000 post offices.
The post office is primarily small payments.
All London buses will have them too by the year end. WIth no Oyster card is needed for tourists etc it surely makes things quicker.

When I went to Italy, every fast ticket machine I saw was already contactless. I was quite interested as to whether this might have worked with a contactless credit card because these fantastic machines failed to recognise my chip. It certainly would have been quicker.

Barclaycard seem to be doing it with a sticker tag you apply to the back of your phone so it's not only npc enabled phones

Yup, unfortunately I don't have a barclaycard to get PayTag. I believe this sort of thing is more common in other bits of the world though.

Seems I now have a Mastercard with it standard too. Theirs is called Paypass

Many pubs, cafes, local shops. Greggs, Boots, M & S support them so it is now expanding extremely fast.
