I've been using yellow safety cycling glasses this week for the commute 6.40am and they've been fine, albeit it getting light around 7am anyway.

I've never tried it myself but some recommend yellow for reducing the glare from car headlamps.

Clear! Yellow lenses give me a headache!

The point of yellow lenses is to improve contrast in soft light conditions like dull, cloudy, misty, daylight.
Objects can blur into the background because they don't have much of a shadow, which they would have in sunlight or at night from the usual artificial light from car headlights, streetlamps etc.

AFAIK yellow and brown-tinted lenses work by cutting out the light flooding into your eyes directly from the sky - this light is primarily blue, so yellow/brown tint blocks it effectively, which means your eyes are more sensitive to the remaining non-blue light scattered from coloured objects. At night, there is no light from the sky, so tinted lenses don't have the same effect.
