Nightmare called Scarborough.

So let me get this straight:
You took an early train to Scarborough, expected tourist stuff on the seafront to be open at 8.30AM out of season, then cycled back not through the flat Vale of Pickering but rather by going UP onto the Wolds (and were surprised that going up onto the Wolds meant going UP), and quit once you got back to York.

Next time talk to a local or use a topo map to plan your route?

A local from the other side of the Atlantic perhaps?


I don't think Postman was necessarily surprised by the hills. He simply comments on them. Sometimes, one can ride a route and feel fine, sometimes it's all hard work. Sometimes the wind matters more than others. Sometimes a ride goes right, sometimes it doesn't.

Anyway Postie, I hope you're feeling fit today.

I will be taking on the enormous task of looking for a new cycling jacket, which may involve a ride of up to a mile, and drinking a lot of coffee and eating cake.

Can someone explain why postman calls Scarborough a nightmare?

Apart from him arriving way too early for his train (I think this is just something people start doing when they get older, cos my parents do it as well...), and the shops not being open before what I would class as opening time I cannot see the gripe with the place.

Got chatting to a young lady who had just come out of a night club on Boar Lane with a load of others, Club Space.Nice kid.She wished us well and i told her to enjoy herself because soon she would get to my age.Her mates joined her and they were half dressed they must have been frozen.

One of my students; a first year who's in my class on Fridays, mentioned she'd been speaking to someone with a bike in the early hours of the morning. And I'd agree with 'nice girl'.

Scarborough to Leeds when it's warmer sounds a better idea. I'd be up for that on a non-work day.

Leeds to Scarborough is even more appealing. Fish/chips/sea/beach/ice cream. In reverse order.

DC what a small world.Who would have believed that.Tell her i enjoyed our little conversation.All of her mates were looking for a warm drink and something to eat and a bit of a kip.
Right at the moment i have a sore throat and crap running down it.That wind.Refreshed and rested so reflections.Taken all in all we did a route out of Brid' three years ago and got to Stamford Bridge at 13-30, on friday we got to Stamford Bridge at 13-50.So not bad in the conditions.Cramp got to me between SB and York which is the first time ever on a ride.Clothes wise bib shorts,bib tights Altura night vision and a pair of baggies.
Two s/s jerseys and one jacket plus a windproof.A good brekkie of porridge and toast at home and a full English plus two teas in Scarborough.
Scarborough is my favourite seaside place of all so no qualms there.But i was surprised at the lack of open cafes at 7-45 to 8-00 in a place like Scarborough.
Now hills they were actually easy and not hills if that makes sense.It was just that wind none stop all day.I read somewhere 27kph whatever that is in real money i have no idea.But the cold got into my beanpole legs pretty quickly.I have spoken with Dave my 68 year old mate and we are going to do it again next year.But we head for Brid at the very start,and follow the same route that we did succesfully three years ago.
So after a couple of sleeps not all doom and gloom.
But bless our railway system.York to Leeds was heaven,warm and quick.

I was just searching for the thread about last year's Leeds to Scarborough ride and found this one instead.

We got a heavenly tailwind nearly all day and I commented to a few people on the day that the ride would have been a nightmare from Scarborough to Leeds! And that was without it being cold.

Definitely worth taking the prevailing winds into account for a ride like this. I had planned a coast-to-coast ride from Scarborough to Blackpool but after nickyboy's ride it will almost certainly be a Blackpool to Scarborough unless I choose a day with a strong easterly wind.

We then went the same route as you to West Ayton.

After that we took a scenic detour North up through Forge Valley Wood and Scarwell Wood before turning NE through Raincliffe Woods and then E into Barrowcliff, before dropping down into Scarborough on the A171.

Nickyboy is deciding whether to organise his Leeds-Scarborough ride again this year. If he decides not to then @Littgull and I may well pinch his route and do it ourselves. It would probably be in September, one way or another.

ColinJ what is it like after Buttercrambe.My mate is over 70 years old.i am actually a little worried.This year could be a testing one,as i have been cycling 'flat' just for him,for the last three years.I don't want to drop him.This route is so much different from one i did years ago,which took in Fridaythorpe and Sledmere,but we were going to Bridlington then.
