Jobsworth; I mostly take my helmet off indoors but I'm pretty sure I've dashed into Tesco's (and other Supermarkets) without doing so.

Do you get off the bike though HLaB?

He's probably been told no bike helmets (meant to be motorbike helmets) and just done as he's told, rather than being told the purpose and aim of his position. The downside of low level job roles often wanting robots over initiative/common sense.

It's all a con.

He wasn't a security guard, he's a normal cyclist just trying to get you to take the useless pudding bowl off your head.

Same happened to me the other day, in Iceland: security guard asked me to take my helmet off.
Thing is, I have dashed in and out of that store before helmet on, nobody bothered.
Go figure!

"Helmets are banned because they obscure the face and prevent identification of miscreants. This doesn't. Now, how exactly could this be used as a weapon?"

I went in there this afternoon to buy a few bottles of beer when i was confronted by some security guard who asked me to take my bike helmet off. He told me that it was for security reasons, as "it covers my head, and it's an offensive weapon"! I pointed out the other head gear items being worn in the store such as jester type hats with bells on,veils, wooley hats, father Christmas hats and others. He said that mine wasn't allowed, just as helmets aren't allowed in banks and petrol stations. I pointed out to him that a cycle helmet doesn't cover the face therefore i'm not covering up my identity, but he wasn't having it and asked me to take it off or leave. He also said that it could be used as an offensive weapon, so i pointed out that that would only be the case if i took it off as he asked. What do you reckon jobsworth or what?!

bit over the top methinks...i always take my helmet off if i have the need to go into a shop etc i feel a bit silly walking around with it without my bike nearby

Hold on, you'd actually walk round a store with your lid on ? Next you'll be telling me you stroll round in lycra ?

The only store I go into lycra'ed up is Decathlon, and the bike comes in with me, but I always take my lid off. You just look such a fool.
