No wonder cyclists are hated

People do seem to like to put other people into little boxes and then judge them

so "all cyclists"

in the same way all BMW drivers are reckless - or Audi or whatever

and now all Tesla driver are fascists - when most of them might well have bought their car a few years ago before Elon started his trump stuff and the brand looked very green and eco and left wing

but there does seem to be a tendency for people to want to have a neat and tidy box to put people in so they can stick a label on it based on minimal evidence

Are you putting those people into a box? 😉

I happen to think that Ashley Neal is a bad example of a driving instructor, particularly with his attitude towards cyclists, so we'll call this one even, eh?

Neal is actually now a cyclist, he recently got a road bike. However, in past he has done a bit of victim blaming in his comments.

Latest one I saw where he was giving bad advice to a pupil regarding cyclists was two months ago. He is, imo, a bad driving instructor passing on an entitled attitude to those he teaches.

Just been to M&S for some shopping
decided to walk for some exercise which means walking down the main road past our estate (housing estate - we are not landed gentry!!)

anyway - the road has a path at the sid e- normal pavement except that it is also a cycle path - if you know where to look for the sign

anyway - it is the weekend and a morning so it is "normal" for cars to park on the path to leave the road clear
The path is about 5m wide (I measured it!) and the cars generally park with a few feet of path left on the road side so the driver can get out easily
which means there is not that much space left between the car and the wire fence on the golf course side - enough for a bike to get past but only if the bushes are not growing out too much

anyway - back to the point

I was walking alongside a Tesla that was parked there perfectly "normally" and there was a loud crunching sound as a teenager (about 17-18) went past me quite fast and went over the dried leaves by the fence
Yea Gods he was close and fast!!

Now I just put that down to a misjudgement by a kid on an ebike (legal - probably)

but I can see why some people might use this to judge every cyclist on that path
(see above post about boxes!!)

If I watch a video of bad driving I don’t feel that reflects badly on me as a car driver.
So why should this idiot’s riding reflect badly on me as a cyclist?

It doesn't directly, but it does add to the perception that all cyclists are complete ******** (insert derogatory name of your choice) so may indirectly affect the way other road users think about you.

It should not be on the path full stop. Entitled git.

In that case all the other people parked there were "entitled gits" as well
basically the whole road is filled with cars parked on the pavement whenever there are football teams playing on the park opposite

and if they didn;t it would cause problems for normal traffic on the road

so - no they should not be parked on the pavement
but there is no other parking (or not enough) for the park on Saturday and Sunday mornings

Park and walk. I'd hazard a guess that most could do with walking more.

That would probably mean they park in our road - and that would also mean parking on the pavement
because every other car is parked on the pavement in the road anyway

(not at our end because everyone has their own drive - but the rest of the road seems to have a "local rule" that you park on the pavement to ease traffic problems)

That is the problem with bans on pavement parking - a lot of estates and such have one of these known local rules

They just have to walk further then. Owning a car doesn’t mean carte Blanche parking.

The story that driving test waiting times are 6 months long is doing the rounds again at the moment (in spite of the fact they have been like this since the pandemic). It always makes me think this is a good thing, we should be encouraging less people to drive. I know we had the old (contentious) BR thread on public transport, but the more that can be done to encourage people out of cars for non essential journeys the better.

As an aside, one of the pieces I read was on some test centres that had the longest wait times. They also (I assume co-incidentally) had pass rates at 35%. If the pass rate is that low it surely suggests that far too many people are taking a test when they are nowhere near ready to do so and should be discouraged from doing so?
