From the CTC newsletter:

In honour of surpassing CTC’s membership record set in 1899, I thought I’d take a look back in the1899 Gazette, the name of CTC’s magazine at that time. ‘The Ladies Page’ for June includes some advice on the problem of what to wear in hot weather: “Most ladies solve it by riding without their coats, regardless of the fact that the view from behind of light shirt, waistband, bit of skirt and saddle is far from becoming…to me it seems a better plan to substitute in summer a cotton coat for the usual tweed, and to make the underclothing as light as possible. White piqué or drill is best for country riders and brown Holland for Londoners and economists.” So there you have it, ‘ladies’, if you are feeling a bit hot when you cycle, the trick is not to wear a tweed coat!

I've got photos of my great grandad digging a duck pond in high summer wearing a shirt, tie, waistcoat and jacket and cap,

Did he wear white flannel trousers to walk upon the beach?

You remember those armband thingies that men used to wear to stop their shirt sleeves being too long? Like the fella in this picture...
I've got some I inherited from my dad... never worn them, though...

One hot day not so long ago my wife and I were resting by a lane, drinking from our bottles when a very elderly couple came by on tourers complete with knee britches, jackets, leather shoes, saddle bags the lot. As they passed the old lady commented in a quavering voice: "I don't know why you're drinking all that; you'll only have to stop and get rid of it!"

Yep, my grandad used to wear them. Never, never wear one near a bare arm - the pain as it pulls all the hair out is not fun - DAMHIKT.

I had a pair. When I first started work as a design engineer (1987ish) CAD systems were still only available to the big boys, Rolls Royce etc, so I was working with a drawing board and pencils. The armbands actually worked because they pull your cuffs up your arms and you get much less chance of smudging. I wore a tie clip or sometimes a waistcoat as well to stop my tie flopping across the drawing as I leaned forward......Ahhh the good old days.

Don't forget, they were probably wearing corsets that constricted all their internal organs as well...

Thank god for living in the 21st century....

Ever worn a corset? It's the sexiest garment known to Woman (and the man who gets to lace her into it.)

I remember reading somewhere that they needed all those extra layers as the climate was colder then. This was certainly the case in the middle ages.

No.... the pleasure is in tightening it up while she wriggles and gasps and moans and the anticipation of what will follow.....

Axfords or Vollers.

The stays tend to poke holes in the seat of the Recumbents.

Not in the Medieval Warm Period

Of course, without central heating and double glazing and carpets and the like, dwellings would have been draughtier and colder at night, but the climate wasn't always worse...
