Never watched it but I do appreciate it was toward the top of US comedy. As an avid Friends fan I can understand why it was so popular. Always sad to hear someone going at the relatively young age of 76

"What are you up to, Norm? My ideal weight if I were 11 feet tall." is still one of the funniest lines American (situation) comedy has produced.

There's a lot of excellent US comedy series over the decades. Cheers was definitely one of them. It's a little dated but still holds up quite well. Norm was a great character.

For some reason reading he was only 76 shocked me, but I had it in my head that Cheers finished much earlier than '93.

Makes sense, as I knew Frasier was a spin-off.

Did someone get out of bed on the wrong side this morning?

I just don't dig American sitcoms is all.

Now, seventies soviet sitcoms, priceless! Their version of Terry and June, Pavel and Olga, is class.

Well, if that's the case why are you posting in an appreciation thread about an actor who has just died?

(Who appeared in a show you never watched )

All sorts of reasons. Because it's sad that the chap has died. Because I can. Because I don't need your permission. Because although I've never watched it I know of it. And so on.

one-liners made funny by knowing the characters saying them
I think this is the essence of it. If you watch it, you get to know the characters, and a line said by someone else would not be funny, but for the characater you know, it is funny. Probably one of the reasons humour works well in sitcoms and not so well in Hollywood films

If i remember rightly the bar had copper signs on the bar, telling you who sat where, and we climbed a very narrow staircase, very odd.But i did get a half of something to drink.
