This coming Tuesday evening finds me in north Bristol; I'm at UWE in Frenchay.

Are there any suggestions of what to do around there of an evening please? I am unlikely to have a bike, but may be able to sneak one onto the car.

Even if you don't have a bike... you're not that far from Parkway which has Brompton hire! You could explore Stoke Park on foot or create a circular route that went through it, equally you aren't that far from the Concorde way so could cycle into town or stop on the way down and explore the Gloucester Road, lots of pubs there and places to eat.

There are maps.... I'm sure they might have some at UWE somewhere, that look like this:

The blue line takes you into Stoke Park the Black on is the Concorde Way.

There used to be a great cafe on Gloucester Road, south of the Avon Gorge railway... is it called cafe kino? They were open to ten at night and often had events in the evenings but I can't find a current listing and their website looks out of date to me.

If you hire a Brompton, the rides along the Avon gorge or over the suspension bridge are quite fun, as is the railway path but maybe you're a bit far away although I think one CCer has posted videos of a route alongside the ring road to the railway path.

You could cycle a little circuit around via Snuff Mills, Oldbury Estate following the Frome.

you could go for a run in Stoke Gifford Park. They might charge you though ;)

I am in Bristol City Centre on wednesday and have the same dilemma. however the weather looks good so might be a nice walk to the landing stage then ride the riverboat for the evening. better than sitting getting drunk .
That's what I'd do -wander around the docks. If you do the ferry loop you'll get a good view of the waterside places where you can then sit and get drunk.
one guy in the office suggested i visit "Old Market" for some nice pubs. I have a feeling this may be a wind up based on the first 2 hits on Google !

Being stuck out at Colditz (student speak for Coldharbour Lane) was not ideal as a fresher. Students in halls rapidly tried to get out into more interesting parts of Bristol.

If you can bring a bike you can drop onto the ring road path & ride to Bath (17 miles-ish) or even just to Saltford for a pint in the Bird in Hand.

If you don't have a bike with you, then a bus into town might suit, and a walk around the docks area is pleasant. Or you can ride down the Concorde Way into town if you do manage to squeeze a bike in.

Concorde Way has gained a new set of temporary residents though they seem to be ignoring all the cyclists, but you could always avoid them by taking the cycle path between UWE and Lockleaze, or a cycle along Purdown is lovely in either the early morning or evening if you don't have really skinny tyres.

Bump for this as I'm back down in Bristol again on Wednesday night this week. Whilst I'm collecting a pair of forks when there this time I'll have a bike with me.

It's quite hip these days... try the Assembly for nice food & drink, and the Palace to marvel at the sloping floor.

Bump again - as I'm back down on Monday/Tuesday next week and out riding Monday evening.

Last year I went to 'Severn Beach' , through the industrial wasteland of Avonmouth, down to Portishead and back: https://www.strava.com/activities/1026332408

This year I'm planning to head direct to Portishead, down to Clevedon for some food and back. Route tbc, leaving UWE Filton around 5.30pm.

Thanks for the suggestions - particularly @User . Rode out to Clevedon via paths/roads and a mostly road route back except through St Werburgh's up to Frenchay: https://www.strava.com/activities/1634532559

Whilst the segregated paths make cycling much safer than in Leeds it does make things slower and circuitous. Sometimes there was a segregated path, sometimes shared and sometimes it just ended.

Going onto the road was quicker, until the Mapmyride route tried to dump me onto the A4.
