I am looking to go touring in the North York Moors in Summer. I know it is a way off, but I am getting excited about getting my first touring bike! Anyone got any good routes/tips/experiences to relate?

Ah! Just read a post with quite a few tips - I will get used to checking!

But any other tips/experiences appreciated. I live in East Yorks myself - so any East/North York rides also appreciated. Perhaps combining the two. Oh, I am looking to spend about a week, and a couple of weekends in the Moors over July and August.

I wouldn't camp out in the forest, unless you like midges, I'd stay a little lower down in the valleys.

Rosedale is nice.

I would get the hard rides (on the moors) out of the way first, with a relaxed Vale of York / Thirsk/ Easingwold / Pocklington / Market Weighton / Beverley type of route to finish (tired legs)

I did a trip in May over the bank holiday. First day Driffield area, up to Malton, then Pickering finishing early at Spiers House near Cropton. Second day was a biggy, rode to Rosedale then up Chimney Bank xx( A nice run down to Hutton le Hole, over to KirbyMoorside, Helmsley (a horrible slog up to Sutton Bank on the A170 - no alternative really), down White Horse Bank and onto Thirsk. From Thirsk I then headed west to Masham for the night.

Day three was a long one. Set off from Masham, then went to Well, Snape, Carthorpe, Kirklington, back to Thirsk for extra brekky, then meandered down the vale of York taking in Dalton, Sessay, Brafferton, Raskelf, Easingwold, Stillington, Strensall, then over to Stamford Bridge, Pocklington before climbing up through Millington to Huggate and home (downhill 6 miles - weeeeeeeee)

Do you want to join us on Sunday? We're heading out from York to celebrate Admin's 40th birthday.

Aww! Thanks Helen - but I haven't got my bike yet. So is this an East Yorkshire-centric site then?? Small world!

I know Rosedale and the Spiers House area quite well from camping and walking.

So where in East Yorks are you two from? I went to the pub in Huggate for a works do last Christmas.

No, loads of people from all over the country and further afield. It's just that Shaun who runs the site is from Hull and there are a few of us in York and East Yorkshire who get out for a ride together now and again. Look out for details in the rides section and come along (once you have a bike!).

Also, if you need any advice about local bike shops I'm sure we can help.

I've got one thing to say about the NY moors. It's ****ing b*st*rd steep. My GOD. It's kind of worth it as long as your gears are low enough and you don't bite off more than you can chew....

You're not wrong! Bandini, make sure you get a bike with very low gears.

Cheers Kirstie - yeah, I will prepare well!

I am getting through the bike to work scheme, so unfortunately can only use Halfords - if it wasn't for the huge saving I would be through to Cliff Pratts in Hull. I will use an LBS for any subsequent gear - I think the vouchers should be for anywhere, but...

The Galaxy looks great (it is the racing green that really does it - pathetic!), but I like the Kara Kum- which means I will have a few quid to spend on kit and can do it all on the voucher. Which will please my partner no end. I also like the idea of butterfly bars - I spend a lot of time using my right hand in a funny position...hey -marking and writing! So my neck occasionally gives me gyp. It is off topic, but I would like to hear any thoughts on the Kara Kum and its specs...I have started another thread on it.

I will check out the other threads.

Thanks a lot - might see some of you on a ride in future.

Yeah I have walked up Chimney bank a few times. There is a campsite and pub at the bottom? Might come in handy if that is a finale to a days biking. Which it probably would be by necessity!
