does anyone know what time the light show is tonight?

Doh, and I thought this thread was about 'gardening' techniques.

I thought the best of the lights were last night but far far up north or have I been reading the wrong rags? Sky is full of cloud here anyway so no joy.

Don't know what time, but there is no cloud in Brum at the moment so hopefully we may see something. I don't know too much about it but I'm guessing we should look north?

not sure about looking north, i think just "up"

it's not the "real" northern lights. there has been an explosion on the sun, and when the gas reaches the earth's atmosphere it's going to give off an aurora borealis effect, same as the northern lights. the news last night and tonight both say it's tonight but GMTV this morning said it was last night.

your guess is as good as mine.

could look like this

Well, I've just sat out in the back garden, quite a long while: long enough to get night vision, but still lots of street lights around to spoil the fun. Nevertheless, can see the zenithal Milky Way, no prob, but no sign of any Aurora.

Your best chance is to be as far 'North of Watford' as possible. I'm not holding my breath in Sussex! And midnight to 2am - the darkest part of the night - sounds like a good bet.

Nice pics.

I went to Iceland a few years back and hoped to catch a glimpse whilst I was there, but no luck. It seems that was at the quieter part of the sun spot cycle, which apparently should pick up from now to 2013 from what I've read in the news. I always wanted to go back to Iceland anyway so may plan a trip for then if I can afford it.

Did anyone watch the Joanna Lumley documentary where she went around Norway trying to see them?

Looked out the window there and didn't see anything except for a satelite, some planes and a couple of seagulls

I saw it when it happened before about 6 or 7 years ago though.

Did you not see them 8 or 9 years ago when this sort of event happened?

Was half thinking this was going to be a thread on the book!

There is a possibility of a second, perhaps larger event:

Space weather

If I've got the time right, it's not due until after 11pm. You can check activity in real time at:

Aurora watch real-time activity

If the graph is green, not much point looking outside but once it goes orange then look to the north and make sure you spend at least ten minutes in darkness to get acclimatised as any effect is likely to be faint, unless you're in the north of Scotland.

In East Anglia in the past, the best I've seen for any aurora is a faint green glow with red flickers that any street lighting nearby would drown out. It's a really wierd effect - the light is not static at all but dances and flashes.

[edit] It looks as some of the alerts have been cancelled - NOAA alerts

According to feedback from the astro forums, not a prayer of a chance of seeing them in England - and probably most of Scotland either. Shetland, maybe? There just isn't enough energy in this particular outburst. Sorry.

What if the graph is purple??

Edit: Oh right, not I get it

Anyway, I spent about an hour and a half out looking at the sky and for my efforts, all I saw was a shooting star (nice in itself), 2 or 3 satelites and a cat.

The Cat had probably just dropped a toxic turd in my garden too

Its actually the other way around, in 2011 we reach the solar maximum.
