Thanks for all the replies... I'm going with the extra few miles while light commute..... and work on the dark nights.....

A question to @Drago and @CopperCyclist There does seem to be a lot of pavement cyclists in Burton on Trent mostly heavy full sussers with people in jeans and work boots riding them (No insult meant to either) who either are lucky and don't pass many Police Officers or a blind eye is turned to it by Officers.

IF I did it and I was spotted by either of you would you stop me more (than above group) as I'm on a (relatively) expensive road bike with clipless pedals, helmet, lights etc and a theoretical higher speed as I should.... A - Know better and B - could inflict more injury on a ped as I could hit them at a higher speed? or would you stop both types of cyclists equally.....

It would make no difference to me at all, and I suspect no difference to the bobbies that would issue a ticket either - as the fact they would issue one probably means they don't cycle and hence wouldn't have even thought I'd the considerations you just did!

This may be going a little too far, and more effort than its truly worth, but...

If you have time, ring 101, ask which neighbourhood team cover the area, and all when their next public meeting is. Attend, and bring up your problem, asking for their views on you "protecting yourself" and cycling considerately on the pavement. As they will be wanting to appease, and know there's not much else they can do to improve infrastructure, they will probably agree... And it's usually the neighbourhood teams that give out these sort of tickets as everyone else is too busy!

St Peters, from what I remember the surface isnt too pretty but the traffic speed is pretty slow? Should be fine to cyvle across I would of thought. Old Bridge, the cycle path is horrific. Deffo stick to the road, crank it up and wave ta ta to the traffic as you zoom by, especially if you've just smashed the Ashby Road descent. I don't ride that way much anymore but have had a good few sprints across it.

It's slow in the opposite direction to my commute I leave Burton in morning and return at night. Coming back home at night traffic is speed limit my direction but crawling towards me... I'm going to use road rather path though

Have you tried scotch hills lane yet ?

yes several times........... in a car.... might try it soon... I do tackle the climb between Rangemore and Tatenhill up to Byrkley garden centre that's a cracking climb do-able but challenging and tatenhill to the Henhurst is good as well (Tin can can hill we used to call it Don't know why).... when I first started I had to walk up that one (wouldn't have attempted up to Byrkley) now I don't even go on to the small chain ring.

I'm at another branch at the moment so using a works van.. I showed a colleague my commute to Swad on Strava...... 7 miles and he said that's ridiculous don't you get tired
