Just for interest I compared with Petzl head torches which I've used for <ahem> "a number of years"

My most powerful to date is a Myo XP - 85 lumens max (150 on "boost") and TBH I usually ratchet that down for sake of the battery life AND put the diffuser on, and that's when I'm running on rough surfaces.

The most powerful Petzl Ultra head torch - 350 lumens, they claim 120 mtr beam.

Obviously it depends on the width of the beam but on that basis 1600 lumens is out to about 250 mtrs with a spot beam, or as you say you really are going to light up a "whole field".

1600 lumens is about the same as a decent car headlight.
The HID headlights that you get as an option on some BMWs etc can go up to 3000.

139 - I measure used to measure my lights in no of LEDs - I had 2x 53 LED lights on my bike, which was plenty bright, but cumbersome, and the mounts sucked.... No bike light that I've ever bought has been measured in Lums - hence why I don't have a feel for them...
