What you seem to be misunderstanding is the "the finer things in life" are not flash cars and big houses, but the simple pleasures like spending time with loved ones, riding your bicycle and taking your dog for a long walk in the countryside.
These are things that don't need to be expensive, they can be achieved and enjoyed on a quite modest income.
Spend some time thinking about what really makes you happy, imagine yourself on your death bed in 70 years time, will you be thinking "I wish I'd spent more time in the office and climbed further up the greasy pole"?
Happiness comes not from getting what you want, but from learning to want the things you've got.

But thats where all the millionares live in their 6 bed houses, Bentleys on the driveways and subterranean cinemas and gyms.

Whats not to like ?

I would probably be a bit more subtle than that, and most certainly not London anyway TBH.

It would be cool to be the guy who dresses like a tramp but be the wealthiest guy in town.... Except nobody knows, so you have the capacity to surprise! :becool::laugh:

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

All thinking people have these thoughts at some point.

I've slowly come to realise a Fiesta got me to work as quick as my old Porker 928, and that I can only crap on one toilet at a time. Back then I'd fallen into the trap of not leading my life in a way that made me happy, but was leading it to impress other people... people who probably didn't give a sheet anyway.

This epiphany was part of the reason I broke up with my first wife. She was very materialistic, a company director, wanted the flashest 6 bedroom Barratt home, 2.4 holidays in Florida and an annual child, or whatever.

I notw don't holiday abroad often, drive a decade old Kia, dress like Compo on a bad day, go shooting, sink Guinness up the pub and play pool with the local gamekeeper, walk my dog and generally live how I want to live, not how the Saturday Telegraph weekend magazine urges me to. I feel a lot more chilled not craving after the latest smartphone, Audi or weekend in New York.

How long you signed up for? I only did 4, but then went to work for Her Maj elsewhere.

You'll be on the 'Wacky Baccy' next. :becool:

I'm not convinced that material gains can ever bring more than momentary happiness - sure its nice to have aspirations but I'm not sure that having the things you crave will bring contentment.... Contentment is, I think, a state of mind, where you are happy with who you are, and are not comparing your live to what others have... And its about living in the present rather than wanting to live in the future....Sorry cos I guess this doesn't help with how you feel right now, but think the simplest way to start is realising that there are things in life that you want and things you need..... and as long as you're able to have the things you need, then you can get on with finding ways to enjoy the life that you have now

Grow it yourself. :becool:

I imagine growing the hops and what have you just to brew some would end up being more expensive than if you just bought it normally!

Oh, you mean the 'Wacky Baccy'?

I suspect that what Crandoggler is actually trying to say is that, given his job and pay, he expected to be more well off at this point than he actually is??
