Oh, BTW if you take the bars out you can split them in half to get the shifters on and off, I can get a picture of the handlebars in two parts if anyone is interested!

Everything about that looks wrong.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

*shudder*
Handlebars, the most safety-critical component, in two bits, held together in a clamp? Please tell me there's a rigid connector inside them.

I'm not sure if they still do it, but top of the range bike builder Thorn had a similar set up on one of their Rhollhoff equipped drop bar bikes.

So it's not just the lower end of the market coming up with this solution

Wow. I assumed it was a decent effort at a Frankenstein bike made by someone from the contents of their spares box, but to find out it comes like that as new, with that shim under the stem and handlebars that come apart ...

Yeah, I've seen those. Over here in the States they are on Walmart generic superstore bikes. Note that these bars have to be splittable to remove/install those shifters. Course, that doesn't mean they aren't safe, but I think I prefer the usual one piece bars. I actually like Gripshift like shifters (just my personal opinion) and would love to do something similar, but I just don't see how you can install any of them on a road handlebar (at least on the top section).

FYI: I have Kelly Take Offs on my tourer and commuter bike and love them. Not quite the same but a different way of shifting for road handlebars without having to take your hands off the bars (or using expensive STI/Ergos).

Jesus. Handlebars that split in half?! This just gets worse.
