We drove over a dead one on the road in Canada; we didn't even touch it but the smell got into the car and was unbeleivably tenacious, it stuck in our possessions and in our noses for hours afterwards. God forbid that you ever get sprayed by one; the three main compounds that compose the smell are detectable to 10 parts per billion and can easily be detected by the human nose a mile downwind. The nearest I've smelled in my job was garlic oleoresin, pure extract of garlic. Even the Ethiopian civet cat doesn't smell as bad as a skunk, its anal marking scent is actually valued in perfumery.
