Joined a road this morning which resulted in a cyclist being about 100m behind me, the cyclist caught me up on a downhill section with a left bend, hate going fast downhill especially when it is wet. The cyclist then decided to overtake, I decide to maintain my cadence and observe the other cyclist. As usual, they briefly go away but start to grind and I close back up realising they have probably over extended themselves. Just as I start to think about overtaking, they decide to pull over onto the pavement and stop.
The whole time I have maintained my preferred cadence, just waiting to reel them back in overtake and then stick in a quick sprint.

If its a downhill corner that I don't like I ease up too and sometimes have had similar but I put up with it and drop back to their pace uphill only overtaking if it safe to do so; in the back of my mind I'd rather have them on a bike than in a car.

I have always been pants on descents but when I was a student made up for it by being very good going up hills.
These days not so good going up them, I blame women, alcohol, kids and work:tongue:

what get's me is when I go past someone before some lights. Stop at the lights & then the guy barges in front of me, pulls away & absolutly hammers it to... to achive somethhing like my 'crusing speed' (& I use the term losely here) then because they're out of the saddle giving it some wiggle it makes it hard for me to pass as their power drops. :cursing:

I often think because my cadence is quite high 100+ some riders believe I am trying really hard when in fact I am doing the opposite.

Agree it can be annoying, but also quite amusing if you scalp them multiple times. On the roads I love a good hare to chase, but never overtake unless I can do so convincingly

I was out on Sunday and got tangled up in a Sportive. Guy came flying past me but I then caught him up on the next incline. He looked so knackered I offered him my emergency gel, which has now done 800 miles, as I passed him. He didn't look too impressed but it made my day.

Although I'm guilty of it myself, I see the competitive streak just as much with cyclists as with any other group. The pass at any cost on public roads is an urge which needs to be resisted.

I know for me, when I see another rider ahead I want to chase after them but then hold back thinking to myself, catch them slowly and save yourself for any potential overtake. It is probably the fear of busting a gut to catch someone, overtake then the shame of blowing up.
