I wonder if any other cities have this feature, I was riding around Chelteham when I followed a cycle lane down Winchcombe St only to find I was going the wrong way down a one way street head on to traffic. I did wonder why the Deliveroo guy was cycling on the footway!

There's a cycle lane in Shirley Southampton, that allows riders against the one way motor traffic on Church St, but the lane is marked for the whole road length... Not stopping within ~20m like your example!😱

Twenty years ago this was relatively common in London in situations that could prove lethal. Contraflow cycle lanes were set up with no physical barrier to the main road, just line markings. The result was that drivers would park in the cycle lane and force the bikes out into the oncoming traffic to continue their journeys. The danger has obviously been recognized as such schemes now have proper barriers to prevent motor traffic from encumbering cycle lanes. Such lanes are also usually two-way, or part of schemes where the direction of use is obligatory. Theory into practice needs thought.

Still pretty common around Croydon area, I've just ridden down one. They don't even have lane markings, just a cycle symbol on the tarmac.

Following on along the road on Google Streetscene the clear obvious other failing there are no signs to motorists indicating their is a contraflow bike lane.

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
There's one very close to where I live (SE London). Residential one way road, with parking on both sides and speed bumps. Sign at the bottom allows bikes in to go against the traffic.

I've never ridden up it. Not on principle or anything, just that I have never had a reason to.

I use one of these contra-flow cycle lanes all the time as it the easiest way for me to get out of the centre of Northampton heading east.
In all the years I've been using it, I've only had one van driver stop and rant at me that I shouldn't be riding there ....

Yes, we have one that I know of in Glasgow city centre.
I only rode it once, was part of a group getting showed new city centre cycle infrastructures.
I wouldn't ride it by choice, then again I don't really ride in that area.

This thread made me wonder it the underlying problem is the attitude of UK car drivers towards cyclists. When I'm touring in France I'm forever using the wrong way down a one-way street ("Sauf ...") and there are no cycle sections marked off, plenty of parked cars and never ever had any issues with oncoming vehicles. Confession: I'll even assume the "Sauf ..." on a one-way when the sign isn't there and it really suits me to take the road and also never had any issues with oncoming vehicles.

Hence wondering about it being related to UK car/van drivers?
